Shoe Jam Recap

DWNTWN

If you thought you loved something so much you would do anything for it then think again, because the love for sneakers is undefinable for some people. These people are called Sneakerheads and they have made a living out of it. DWNTWN presented the first ever Sneaker Jam event that welcomed sneaker lovers of all ages to come out and buy/sell/trade at our Cerritos location. Sneaker enthusiasts from all around California flocked over to the shop and showcased their collection of sneakers from Nike SB, Air Jordans, Vans and a variety of other sought after sneakers. DJ Episode was also spinning on the turntables along with artists Dino and Kickstradomus customizing sneakers. Thanks to the droves of vendors and sneaker lovers who came out to show love for the event. Click through the rest of the recap for pictures and stay tuned for the next Sneaker Jam!

Transit Live at Dwntwn

Transit Live at Dwntwn
Transit Live at Dwntwn

Transit stopped by DWNTWN Cerritos on their last tour with Man Overboard for an exclusive acoustic performance. Having recently release Futures and Sutures on Rise Records, Transit wanted to have the opportunity to play some of the songs they had re-imagined acoustically and the sold out Roxy Theatre show they were playing that night with some energetic sets coming from Knuckle Puck and Forever Came Calling might not have been the right time and place for that. So we got in contact with Transit and offered our stage. Fans got treated to real intimate and close up performance of some of Transit's greatest songs. The set list for the afternoon was Nothing Lasts Forever, Young New England, Skipping Stone, Listen And Forgive, and Long Lost Friends. Knowing this was going to be a special performance that we all want to remember, we had Cavis Tapes come out to professionally record the whole show and have some footage a bit more steady and a lot higher quality than all of you holding your cell phones for 45 minutes straight. Enjoy the videos below and keep a look out for more bands playing in store as we have several shows a month. Transit - Nothing Lasts Forever - Live at Dwntwn

Head over to Cavis Tape’s YouTube channel for even more live footage of a lot of other great shows likeTouché Amore at Chain Reaction, The Story So Far at Warped Tour, and (a personal favorite ) Hot Water Music at The Glasshouse. Thanks again to Transit for putting on a great show and keep a look out for more great bands performing at DWNTWN.

The 1st Annual Lifestyle Festival

DWNTWN

On Saturday March 29th we held the first annual Lifestyle Festival at the DWNTWN in La Mirada. We wanted to get all of the friends and all of the artists we work with together and have one big day surrounding and supporting the creative outlets that run parallel to the streetwear culture. Most weekends we have an artist come in to create something live in-store, but for the Lifestyle Festival, we went big and got four of our up and coming talents to all work at the same time. Sue Art, Brek, Konfused, and Hippeaux came for the festival and showed the diversity and creativity within the same medium. Each of these artists had their own unique vision and style of what can be done with some paint and brushes. You can find all four of these artists pieces hanging on the walls of DWNTWN La Mirada.

There is no denying the huge influence music has within the streewear lifestyle. Throughout the entire Lifestyle Festival we had five acts perform on our stage. These Pilgrims kicked everything off with their brand of folk and blues pouring out of every instrument on stage. Their emotive songs move through you and their stage presence draws you into the performance like the show itself was just for you. Monik Deville came on next representing the hip hop scene. His smooth flow on top of some of the best beats this side of the five freeway had everyone's head nodding. Yukon Gold took the stage next to bring a little rock into the festival and reminded us of the power of volume. No festival is complete without some reggae and Dub 8 did just that. It takes a lot to stand out as a truly talented and soulful reggae band when there are already so many established greats, but Dub 8 does just that and taps into the spirit of the genre with each song. Jeramiah Red closed out the Lifestyle Festival with some award winning power chords and air guitar inspiring solos. These are some incredibly talented guys who just walked away with the OC Music Awards Best Rock Band and Best Blues Band in the same year. You can expect big things for Jeramiah Red and we were all lucky to get such an up close and personal show from them. DWNTWN Wax and Blackbird Records were there with bin upon bin of new and used vinyl to keep your ears content at home as well. DWNTWN Wax is our pop up record shop we keep in all our locations and BlackBird Records just opened on Lambert in Whittier and brought their fresh supply of vinyl as well to bring some great cuts for any collector.

With a little help from the Wray Bro's, we had a heated skate competition going on all day long as well. We just got our latest decks in at DWNTWN and wanted to get everyone in to show off their new custom shape and improved construction. The day started out with a high ollie / long ollie competition followed up by a best trick competition on multiple obstacles we had set up. The whole event was rounded out with a game of skate with prizes awarded from DWNTWN, The Wray Bros, JSLV, and Sk8Mafia being handed out to the winners.

Maybe all of this activity got you hungry? We understand. Thats why we got Chef Cody from Fullerton's best Whiskey spot Hopscotch to come down and show us a thing or two about al pastor and chicken. These street tacos were some of the best we've had, rivaling any other taco truck your one friend had at their last family party.

We would like to truly thank everyone that came through and made it a great time. Another giant thank you to all of the bands, artists, chefs, and athletes that brought the best of their talent for the first Lifestyle Festival. Next year holds nothing but bigger and better things and this Festival is no exception. Check out all the photos below for a first hand account of the entire event.

Saturday December 14th the one and only Lil Rock and Dwntwn will host the second In Store B-boy/B-Girl Battle. There will be an open competition for $100 cash and $100 in prizes and an exhibition battle featuring OG West Coast Rockers battle their students into the crew. Representing the OG's will be Enerjetik, Beneficial, Friction, and Lil Rock. Representing the New Skool will be Dancene, Flexy, David, and Woody. Keeping this whole night going will be not one but two DJ's on the 1's and 2's. DJ Abel and DJ Wobbles will be there and a performance from hip hop warriors, Speach Impediments.

On top of all this we will be releasing Lil Rock's second signature tee which is a special collaboration with both DWNTWN and JSLV. At the last Rock City event Lil Rock's signature tee nearly sold out at the event itself so be sure to be at DWNTWN La Mirada to grab yours early.

Speaking of the last Rock City, here's a recap of how that all went down. There was a great turn out of people filling up DWNTWN Cerritos out with positive vibes, world class talent, a lot of open cyphers,  and a 1 on 1 B-boy competition where B-boy Web from Underground Flow got the win after a fierce battle against Enerjetik! We also had a surprise battle between Concrete Allstars and Battle Holix (Italy) at the event. You can check out the entire surprise battle below and trust me, its HYPE!!!

Make sure you come out to Dwntwn La Mirada on Saturday the 14th for some support, buy an exclusive tee, cypher, enter the battles yourself, or simply sit back and enjoy the show!

Warren G at Commonwealth Lounge

DWNTWN

WarrenGWeb-670x670.jpg

As a Southern California adolescent the 1994 release of Regulate… G Funk Era instantly made Warren G a larger than life icon to me. When the opportunity to work firsthand with Warren was presented to me it was something I simply could not refuse. Commonwealth Lounge in Downtown Fullerton had a packed house on the night of October 17th to see this West Coast legend live and in person, but it was what happened before the performance that will stay with me forever. I had the privilege to take Warren out to dinner at Hopscotch Tavern, which is two doors down from the venue of the performance. As Warren took his first glance at the menu he could not make up his mind on what he wanted and he seamlessly went into the chorus of his hit song “I Want it All.” It was extremely interesting to hear the opinions of Warren on the everyday topics of music, sports, food, and life in general. As the Dodgers were in the thick of a pennant race, Warren shared his verse on the new Dodger tribute track he did with Ice Cube and he even spit his verse right there at the dinner table.

As dinner concluded we headed over to Commonwealth Lounge where Warren put on a stellar performance. Performing hits such as “Regulate,” “This D.J.," and “Aint No Fun” amongst others. Immediately upon conclusion of the show it was extremely impressive how Warren willingly took photos and signed autographs for all who requested, exemplifying how he truly is gracious to those who appreciate his music. It is not hard to get caught up in the moment when you are in such an intimate environment watching someone who was so musically impactful to my generation and this entire experience was genuinely something that I will never forget.

A big thank you is in line for DJ Rush, the staffs of both Hopscotch and Commonwealth, and to the one and only Warren G.

DWNTWN presents DJ Quik

DWNTWN

DJQuik.jpg

DJ Quik's face up in The Source

On Thursday September 12th DWNTWN is hosting DJ Quik at the Commonwealth Lounge in Fullerton. Its 21+ and $20 to get in the door. Maybe you've heard of him. He was born and raised in Compton. Put out a few records. Made a few music videos. Is a West Coast living legend. Was just named the #1 Hip Hop producer in the LA area by LA Weekly (they did note they weren't counting Dr. Dre since he "belongs to the world"). He honestly doesnt need any introduction because he spent over twenty years making beats you know and love.

THAT DJ QUIK.

Now that you know who we are talking about, lets discuss where you'll be seeing him. The Commonwealth Lounge in Fullerton. If you haven't been here, you're missing out on one of the classier looking bars in the Downtown Fullerton area with its prohibition era decor and cocktail selections. However, where Commonwealth concerns you and the West Coast Icon in question, is that its a real intimate venue to see any artist at. Let alone someone that could easily sell out a place ten times its size. You'll be feet away from DJ Quik at the Commonwealth and because of its open floor plan and size, there wont be a bad seat in the whole place (though you better not be sitting down when Quik takes the stage).

Now to get you ready for the night. With eight proper albums, it might be a little daunting to narrow down whats going to give you a good overlook of the DJ Quik at his best. We had a DJ from our own DWNTWN Family, the one and only DJ Beneficial, make a playlist of some of DJ Quik's most important cuts for you to check out. DJ Beneficial grew up in Southern California and his knowledge of West Coast Gangster Rap is Jeopardy worthy.

And if you're wondering what to wear....... we got you covered. One of our own designs, Westside Till I Die, would be more than fitting for just such an occassion. You'll note DJ Quik is right up there between Kurupt and Dr. Dre. We designed and produced this shirt before we ever dreamed that one day we would be hosting an event to showcase any one of these legends. But you cant all be wearing the same thing at the event, so here is another solid choice.

Second 2 None

DWNTWN

Second 2 None

On Saturday April 28thDWNTWN Cerritos played host to the release of The Second 2 None mixtape by up and coming hip hop artist 2WiG. Well over 100 gathered for the listening party as DJ Wolf-E was on the decks mixing it up. 2WiG sprinkled in some live performances throughout the listening party as well. Instant classics like "Stick Up," "California Dreamin" with its tight sample of the Mamas and the Papas classic track, and "Put Em Up" are all sure to keep your head nodding across all twenty tracks. Be sure to grab this mixtape and stay up with 2WiG as he takes it to the next level. Los Angeles based artist Meex was also on hand for a live art show. His depiction of Slick Rick was second to none to say the least.

Slick Rick by Meex One

We asked 2WiG how he felt the listening party went and he said, “I had a great time at the release. The DWNTWN vibe is always dope plus they have my favorite brands. I was pumped to share this experience with everyone who supports me. Shout out to EH, Essential, Yesterday’s News/FuctupLA Clothing for helping promote and DWNTWN for hosting the event.”

We would like to thank 2WiG for coming out and throwing it down, DJ Wolf-E for spinning, Meex for the amazing art show, and most importantly a special thanks to everyone who came out and supported the event at DWNTWN Cerritos.
